ALTOONA, Pa. — A Frederick woman died at Altoona Hospital after being injured in a single-vehicle crash at about 7:45 p.m.

Thursday on U.S. 220 near Cumberland Road, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Carol Ann Mackie, 37, was on her way back to Frederick after dropping off her daughter, Katie, 4, to spend time with Katie's

father, said Mary Flanary, Mackie's sister.

The three always met in Bethel, Pa., which is the halfway point between where they lived.

Flanary does not know why Mackie was driving on U.S. 220 because it was not her usual route home.

Mackie's 1990 Toyota Corolla veered to the right while traveling southbound on U.S. 220 and slid sideways on grass which caused the vehicle to go into a dirt ditch, police said. The Corolla struck the ditch with its front end and flew into the air while rolling end over end across Cumberland Road.

The Corolla struck another dirt embankment on the south side of Cumberland Road, slid up an embankment and struck several trees before coming to a rest on the passenger side, police said. A helicopter flew Mackie to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries several hours later.

"She was a down-to-earth person and always had a beautiful smile on her face," said Laurie Wolfe, whose husband Rich is Mackie's first cousin.

Both Wolfe and Flanary said Mackie was a devoted mother who loved spending time with her daughter.

"Her daughter was the world to her," Wolfe said. "Family was everything to her."

Mackie lived in Frederick for most of her life and graduated from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. She enjoyed making crafts, spending time with her friends, and riding motorcycles, Flanary said.

Mackie celebrated her 37th birthday Tuesday.

Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick is in charge of the arrangements.

A viewing will take place Monday with the funeral held Tuesday. Mackie will be buried in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
